It was a good weekend for Jesus Christ (Jonathan Roumie) and his followers both in the drama series The Chosen and for those loyal fans that can’t get enough of the television series. However, as the show has done in past seasons, episodes for the fifth installment of eight episodes, dubbed “The Last Supper” as we’re at that point in Jesus’s story, are first screening in movie theaters before they drop on television.
This past weekend, the first two episodes, aka Part One of the three-part release strategy, grossed $11.5 million in over 2000 theaters. That makes the debut the biggest opening weekend to date for the series. The release is distributed by Fathom in the U.S. and Trafalger Releasing internationally.
With the release of the first two episodes, its gross is even more impressive when compared to the season four release in February 2024, which took in $7.4 million on the first weekend. Pre-sales for the next two parts of season five are currently more than double the previous pre-sales for Season 4 with a 250% increase.
For the rollout for the rest of the season, part two of the fifth season (episodes 503-505) will start screening on April 4 while part three (episodes 506-508) will screen starting April 11. For showtimes in your area, the best place to check is on The Chosen website, which has all the pertinent information to purchase pre-sale tickets.
But, to be clear, the fifth season will also be coming to television soon when The Chosen premieres exclusively in June (no specific release date yet) on Amazon’s Prime Video in the U.S. as part of the deal that was announced in February. According to Variety, the series will be available on a non-exclusive basis later this year on Prime Video in Canada, Australia, New Zealane, Sub-Saharan Africa, U.K. and Latin America. Also, the fifth season episodes will also air on other streamers and outlets later this year.
Who’s going to see The Chosen in theaters? Did you already buy your tickets? Let me know if the comments even if you’re skipping the theater and waiting until the episodes start airing in June on Prime Video. I know I cannot wait!
Until next time…
