Taste Test! How Does the O.G. Kit Kat Compare to Norway's Kvikk Lunsj?
Let the taste testing begin in my latest travel piece from Thailand!
It’s always a nice comfort knowing that while living in Bangkok, Thailand, there are plenty of Western food brands over here that I can visit when I am missing a bit of home. I can swing into a McDonald’s, KFC, Krispy Kreme or even Taco Bell if the mood strikes me. And in the grocery store, Lay’s Potato Chips are plentiful as well as Prego pasta sauce and non-food items like Colgate toothpaste and Downy fabric detergent.
But when we’re talking about candy, things are a little different. Traditional Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are hard or impossible to find (possibly the hot climate here is to blame?) and I have yet to see other U.S. chocolate bar staples like Snickers and Three Musketeers bars. That said, M&Ms are thankfully everywhere and so is the Nestle Kit Kat.
In fact, countries in Asia love Kit Kats so much that I see them everywhere. Grocery stores have huge displays, every 7-11 (also a big Western staple here) carries them not only here in Thailand but also in countries like Malaysia, Japan and Taiwan. So for what Thailand lacks in some of my favorite chocolate candy, it makes up for in the not just a variety of Kit Kat flavors (original, Green Tea, Dark Chocolate, 52% Dark with Cacao, to name a few) but the fact that you can also purchase Kit Kat cereal, Kit Kat coffee pods and even Kit Kat ice cream bars.
But then earlier this year, Boyd went on a work trip to Norway and came back with a chocolate bar I’d never heard of - the Kvikk Lunsj (pronounced like Quick Lunch). It’s very similar to the Kit Kat in that it’s chocolate over four thin wafers that have chocolate in between them and culturally they’re a big part of hiking culture in Norway. And once I did some research online, I saw both of them actually came into existence around the same time in the 1930s and have remained popular for going on 100 years.
But does the Kvikk Lunsj taste like the Kit Kat or is there a big difference between the two? I do know Norwegians pride their Kvikk Lunsj bar as superior but since I suddenly had both in my possession, I thought it was my duty to try them both on camera and see how they taste. Tough job but someone’s gotta do it, right?
Here’s the YouTube video with the verdict between the Kvikk Lunsj and the Kit Kat:
Have you had a Kvikk Lunsj? Let me know if you have and if you agree with my findings.
Until next time…
Little known fact about me and high school. Everyday I would go to Mr David's office, our vice principal at Adams High School, and ask for a Kit Kat from his stash of candy bars that would be sold for different activities. Mr. David would sometimes come to me, I worked as an assistant bookkeeper, one day when I walked into his office he said "well, there's my Kit Kat Lady!" And from that day forward I was known as the Kit Kat Lady. Just a cute little story I wanted to share. Oh and by the way, Kit Kats are still my favorite. But I'm willing to try the Kvikk Lunsz.
Hey Bro!
If the Kvikk Lunsz is advertised as hiking chocolate, I would like to know…Is there more of a nutritional value to the ingredients? If I’m hiking I don’t want just sugar & chocolate for energy. Is it more like a Clif bar with good chocolate around it?
