'Ripley' Trailer Shows Andrew Scott's Darker Side
As if that wasn't enough, take a peek at more standout new series coming this month.
It’s good to be Irish actor Andrew Scott these days. Coming off his triumph in the heart wrenching film drama All of Us Strangers opposite Paul Mescal (currently streaming on Hulu, fyi), Scott is coming to us next in the Netflix adaption of Patricia Cornwell’s gripping Tom Ripley novels.
A manipulative grifter in the 1960s, Ripley is hired by a wealthy man to head to Italy and bring back his son, Dickie (Johnny Flynn), who has been living the good life with girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning). The trailer quickly shows that Ripley is a complex character who is called a liar and clearly not someone Marge (for starters) trusts. (And the black and white-ness of it all just adds so much even when looking at luscious Italy).
But whether you know the books or the 1999 Talented Mr. Ripley film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwenyth Paltrow, what is sure to come in the eight episode series is some deception, more than a few lies and, of course, murder with Ripley in the middle of it all. (I have yet to receive screeners for review, fyi)
I’ll be ready to watch when Ripley drops on April 4 on Netflix. For now, the trailer will have to suffice.
Need more trailers for new series coming this month? Why not? March 15 marks the premiere of Manhunt, a period drama following the search and capture of John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle, one of the standouts in the current Masters of the Air limited series, also on AppleTV+) following the infamous assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater). The series, based on James L. Swanson’s book, "Manhunt: The 12-Day Search for Lincoln’s Killer, stars Outlander alum Tobias Menzies as Edwin Stanton, who leads the search for Booth. Here’s an Inside Look at the upcoming drama:
Looking for laughs wrapped up in a mystery? Then Diarra From Detroit (March 21, BET+) will be right up your alley. The series, created by and starring Diarra Kilpatrick (Perry Mason, The Last O.G.) is sharp, fun and edgy as messy Diarra meets the man of her dreams, Chris (Shannon Wallace), is then ghosted by him but comes to believe he’s been kidnapped. I’ve seen the first episode of the series and it left me wanting more of Kilpatrick and the show. While you wait for my one-on-one chat with the delightful Kilpatrick coming soon on Coffee, TV & Me, check out the trailer below.
…and if there’s someone who has been deserving of headlining a series it’s Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian, Better Call Saul). And with Parish, he delivers in the role of Gracian “Gray” Parish, a man with a dark past he thought he left behind until a murder of someone very close to him bringing out old habits that weren’t dead after all. The series also stars Arica Himmel, Skeet Ulrich and Bradley Whitford. Parish premieres March 31 on AMC and AMC+. Check out the trailer and tell me you aren’t going to watch this one!
