Ironically, it’s on the third anniversary of the premiere of Heartstopper’s first season that we finally received some news on the beloved series’ future. Netflix announced today that Heartstopper will return for a final feature film that will conclude the story of Nick (Kit Connor), Charlie (Joe Locke) and their friends.
This final film, which begins production in summer 2025, will be based around the sixth volume of Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper graphic novels, which has yet to be released. The film will be directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colene) and Connor and Locke will also be executive producers on the project along with Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Alice Oseman and Euros Lyn.
“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story. I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion,’ said Oseman in a quote included in the Netflix release.
The film synopsis was also included in the release: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
I'm glad we're getting something 😊. Actually a movie doesn't sound too bad to conclude the story. I just hope it doesn't end in a sad breakup.
