One of the perks of being an entertainment journalist in a major city like Los Angeles or New York City is you inevitably end up working alongside others who are doing the exact same job for a different outlet. If all else, you can at least feel like you’re not in this crazy profession alone but also build a network of trusted people who you can help on occasion and you can return the favor, too.
Eric Goldman is one of those guys who I’ve stood next to on countless press lines, sat with at numerous roundtables doing interviews and passed as we run around various TCA parties trying to get quotes from talent and producers. Another perk of this profession is sometimes you get to travel to shooting locations like the multiple trips we took over the years to visit Vancouver sets like Supernatural, Smallville and The Flash or much bigger trips to locations like Capetown, South Africa where we flew to visit the set of the Starz drama series Black Sails in 2015.

Earlier this year, I was posted on social media and wrote here on Coffee, TV & Me about being unexpectedly let go from TV Guide Magazine at the end of 2023 and noticed that Eric’s job writing for Fandom had also come to an end. Like me, I saw that we were both in similar boats by being thrust back into the freelance world as well as experimenting with the plusses and minuses of posting on platforms like YouTube and Substack.
So why not get together virtually and compare notes on how we were both doing in this new chapter in our professional lives, what’s worked, what hasn’t worked as well as what the future holds for both of us. Also, fyi, Eric is also posting the same video himself so this is essentially a collaboration. We’re each posting ourselves since “collaborating on Subatack” was one thing I wasn’t sure would be beneficial. If we’re wrong, then we’ll just chalk that up to things we’re learning along this crazy ride!
Besides TV coverage, Eric also loves film, amusement parks and all things pop culture so to check out his Cultured Pop Substack, you can find it here. For his YouTube page with so much excellent pop culture reviews, you can find it here. I suggest you subscribe to us both because, if nothing else, it would make us both really happy!
For myself and future posts here, would you like to see more chats like this? Would you like to have it also added in podcast form or even a full transcript of the chat posted? Let me know in the comments.
Until next time…
