Elephant Love in Thailand
We visited the natural Kanta Elephant Sanctuary and had a great day with these beautiful, gentle creatures. You can visit them, too, and we've got the info here.
One of the things you’ll see regularly when exploring things to do while visiting Thailand is hanging out with elephants. The good news is there are a multitude of sanctuaries all over the country but we learned to take our time and make sure we were giving our time and money to a natural sanctuary where the elephants are given a life that resembles how they actually would live in the wild. Sorry to break the news to you but humans riding on elephants is not a natural thing.
Thanks to Boyd being such a good researcher, we knew the Kanta Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand was the one for us. Here’s the info from the Kanta page on TripAdvisor.
Kanta Elephant Sanctuary, The Ultimate Elephant Sanctuary. A new dimension of seeing, feeling and touching the elephants in the wild open space, happily. As they are parts of our family there is no need to control them in the harm way. No Training Hook No Ankle Chain and absolutely No Riding. Our elephant were take care of by our Carer with love and respect.
Since spending time there during a visit in November, 2022 (prior to actually moving from the U.S. to Thailand), we have been wanting to go back so that’s a goal for 2025. The video here was one of the first we’d ever done for our then-new YouTube page and at first I hesitated in posting it since there’s a mix of horizontal and vertical video and we also didn’t have a mic so the sound isn’t ideal (it’s as loud as I could possibly make it in IMovie, fyi, so just turn up the volume when we’re talking…lower for the music portion) but we were learning and looking at the footage, it seemed silly not to post. (And don’t you love the shirts that they give you to wear during your time there? There are changing rooms and showers since it can be a little hot spending time with the elephants.)
There are more details on booking your time at the Kanta Elephant Sanctuary on their Facebook page and their website, which has pricing information as well as a place to schedule a morning, afternoon or full day visit as well as a donation link to support.
Enjoy this video of our time feeding, kissing and just being in the presence of the wonderful elephants. We’ll be going back soon!
Until next time….
