Did Isaiah Mustafa know CROSS would be a hit with viewers? (INTERVIEW)
The actor also talked about his journey as an actor and who he'd love to work with.
What a journey it’s been for actor Isaiah Mustafa to land on the Amazon Prime Video hit crime drama Cross, which launched in November and quickly became a must-see show for viewers. In fact, the series, based based on James Patterson’s “Alex Cross” novels and starring Aldis Hodge as Alex Cross and Mustafa as his partner and BFF John Sampson, hit 40 million viewers in its first 20 days of streaming, according to Amazon. In a word…whoa! (The first season is available to watch now on Amazon Prime Video.)
Even more exciting for Mustafa and the show and cast is the NAACP Image Award nominations Cross received. Hodge was nominated in the Outstanding Actor category and the show itself in the Outstanding Drama Series category with Mustafa garnering a nomination in the Supporting Actor category. Not bad for a guy who first became known for his role as “The Old Spice Guy” in the iconic commercials and has since parlayed that fame into roles in TV series like Shadowhunters (where I first started interviewing Mustafa) and films like It: Chapter Two.
But given his career in the entertainment industry, did the Portland-born actor know in his gut that Cross would connect with audiences? I made sure to ask him when I zoomed with him just before the Christmas holiday about that, his career and where he is with his Old Spice commitments.
Here’s the video of our chat with some clips from Cross (including a hilarious scene where Cross teases Sampson by saying he smells like “mothballs and Old Spice”) provided by the good folks at Amazon Prime Video.
