Christmas Madness in Bangkok
Why does a Buddhist country get so into the holiday spirit? We have answers!
It was late October, 2022 when I visited Bangkok, Thailand with my husband (and Thailand native) Boyd and I noticed something really unexpected as I wandered around the city and visited some of shopping malls - there was Christmas music and decorations already exploding everywhere.
I was confused.

Thailand is a Buddhist country. Sure, there are ex-pats and many of us from countries that do celebrate the most wonderful time of the year here but for a country that technically isn’t about Christmas, I was impressed with just how into the holidays the country gets.
Turns out that’s the key to it all - Thailand gets into the holiday season, period. They don’t celebrate Christmas (though you may be fooled by the Santa Claus images that are all over the place) but they do celebrate the New Year so this is just a great excuse to dive into the whole season.
Since we now live in Bangkok, as soon as holiday decorations started showing up just before Halloween, I took my phone out and started capturing video of the daytime and the nighttime and was again blown away how festive everything got even when many of the days came with temperatures in the low 90s (Fahrenheit). Here’s my compilation and little more explanation about the Christmas madness in Thailand. (And, as a little holiday gift to us, why don’t you LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to our travel page? Until next time…Happy Holidays!
